Civic Education Programme at Riverton Early Childhood Centre Sept. 15

The Students for Transformation (SFT), the youth outreach component of the National Transformation Programme (NTP), will be hosting a civic education programme on Wednesday, September 15, at the Riverton Early Childhood Centre, in Riverton Meadows, starting at 9:00 a.m.
Students at the institution will take part in the colouring and reading of books containing lessons of good citizenship. Newly crowned Miss Jamaica World 2010, Chantal Raymond, who has partnered with the SFT to host the project, will read to the children, while pointing out the positive messages found in the books.
The colouring books that will be utilised by the students were produced by the Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE), with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Director of Development, Planning and Monitoring at the NTP, Fabian Brown, told JIS News that the SFT is planning to host similar sessions within several schools in Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and St. Ann and where students are members of the SFT.
“We are looking though, at the primary level of educational institutions and the early childhood preparatory level, where we will be able to engage the students in executing the civic exercise,” Mr. Brown said.
“The idea is that in the colouring exercise, different lessons will be taught, lessons of leadership, lessons of respect, lessons for reverence for life and responsibility, lessons that really speak to that first class citizen concept that the National Transformation Programme will be engaging islandwide,” he added.
