Charity Run for Ocho Rios

March 29, 2004

The Full Story

Island Village and the Ocho Rios/Runaway Bay chapter of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), St. Ann, will be hosting a 5K charity run/walk, on Saturday, April 10, beginning at 7:00 a.m.
The event, which will take place in the resort town of Ocho Rios, is aimed at raising funds for two worthwhile charities, Teen Challenge Jamaica, a drug rehabilitation programme; and the St. Ann Commission for the Homeless.
Frances Yeo, Island Village General Manager, told JIS News that the two charities were selected “because we really want to keep up in terms of giving back to the community, and we see that these two organizations have really been working assiduously over the past years to help in their respective areas”.
Miss Yeo said the run/walk, which was expected to begin at Island Village, would see the participants heading to Reynolds Pier, from where they will “double back” by going through the town and taking the by-pass road back to Island Village.
Commenting on the objective, she said the event was not so much about the competition, but about “the spirit of community”, pointing out that already, several corporate entities, including hotels and other businesses in Ocho Rios and St. Ann’s Bay have registered. She added that individuals could also register by paying a fee of $500.00.
“This is something new that the JHTA and Island Village are doing, and we are really encouraged by the support that we have received so far,” Miss Yeo said.
