Cemeteries In Westmoreland Get Face-Lift

February 14, 2004

The Full Story

The Westmoreland Parish Council has carried out extensive cleaning and beautification works on 10 cemeteries across the parish of Westmoreland at a cost of approximately $350,000.
The project began in November last year and lasted for three months, providing temporary employment for over 100 labourers.
Among the cemeteries cleaned were, Bogg, Darliston, St. Paul’s, Tate, Prospect, Petersfield, Georges Plain, Grange Hill and Red Ground.
Albert Stewart, Superintendent of Roads and Works for Westmoreland, told JIS News that the clean-up was part of a larger project to beautify properties under the care of the Council.
“It was observed that most of our cemeteries were in very bad condition with heavily overgrown shrubs, which often made it difficult for citizens to prepare for burials. The Council therefore made the decision that allocations from the parish’s Equalization Fund be used to clean these areas”, he said.
He noted that as soon as funds were available, other cemeteries across the parish would be given a face-lift with special attention paid to the installation and repairing of security fencing.
Meanwhile, Secretary-Manager Patricia Sinclair-Steer, announced at a recent sitting of the Council, that approval has been given for the establishment of a cemetery at White House.
“The new White House Cemetery would be established on lands acquired from the Urban Development Corporation (UDC). All the necessary approvals from respective agencies such as the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) have already been received and as soon as the Parish Council can come up with the funding, work will get underway”, she informed.
Councillors present at the meeting credited the development to the work of former Councillor Ivan “Bob” Pinnock, who had lobbied long and hard for the establishment of a cemetery in his division.
They recommended that when the cemetery was established, it should be named for Mr. Pinnock.
