May 11, 2004

The Full Story

Cabinet has formally approved a contribution in excess of US$23 million by the Global Fund to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Jamaica. Minister of Information, Senator Burchell Whiteman said that the money would support new and existing programmes both within and outside the health sector that promote public, private and non-governmental efforts for improving the prevention, treatment, care and support to those that were directly affected by the disease.
Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on Monday (May 10), Mr. Whiteman said that the sum would also help to provide antiretroviral drugs to both children and adults living with HIV/AIDS, promote healthy lifestyles and safer sex practices including abstinence, especially among marginal groups that tend to be more at risk.
“It will also support the completion and implementation of policies and legislative framework specifically addressing stigma and discrimination aimed at persons living with HIV/AIDS,” Senator Whiteman said.
Minister Whiteman further pointed out that after the funding comes to an end in 2008, the Government would begin to allocate the required resources to continue to treat people living with HIV/AIDS.
Meanwhile, he also informed that Cabinet had also approved another proposal to the Global Fund to improve HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and policy efforts within the country.
The Global Fund was set up in January 2002 for the purpose of attracting, managing and disbursing additional resources through a new public-private partnership that will make a sustainable and significant contribution to the reduction of infections, illness and death, thereby mitigating the impact caused by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in poor countries.
