Cabinet Approves Contract for Shoreline Protection Wall

Cabinet has approved the award of a contract in the amount of $103 million to Nakash Construction and Equipment Company Limited for the construction of 90 metres of shoreline protection wall at the proposed site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on Port Royal Street, downtown Kingston.

This is contained in a Cabinet Ministry Paper tabled in the House of Representatives on December 6.

The Government, in its thrust to restore downtown Kingston, approved the acquisition of Lot #20 Kingston Waterfront for the construction of the new Foreign Affairs Ministry building on Port Royal Street.

The Ministry Paper also notes that a feasibility study, prior to the construction, has shown that coastal revetment works and storm-surge protection civil works are necessary to safeguard the property.

Meanwhile, Cabinet approved the sale of 2.288 acres of unimproved lands at Kingston Pen to Seprod Limited by the Factories Corporation of Jamaica for $55 million.

The document says that the Seprod Group intends to use the property to expand its factory operations and to construct warehousing facilities to store products for its marketing companies islandwide.

The proposed development is expected to involve significant capital expenditure and generate additional employment.
