The Full Story

Cabinet has approved the award of a contract valued at $222.47 million to construct a multi-storey car park at Park Boulevard in New Kingston for customers of the National Housing Trust (NHT) and visitors of Emancipation Park. Minister of Information, Senator Burchell Whiteman made the announcement on Monday (May 10) at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
The contract, which has been awarded to Cooper and Associates Limited will see the construction of the multi-storey car park with the capacity to hold 330 vehicles.
“It is expected that the car park will accommodate the vehicles of staff and customers of the National Housing Trust and it is also expected that the car park will facilitate those who visit Emancipation Park,” said Senator Whiteman.
Additionally, he said that the car park was expected to accommodate the excess parking requirement for hotels in the surrounding areas at a fee to be determined.
The proposed work, he said, was comprised of the construction of a gymnasium of approximately 355 square metres and a multi-storey car park of 12,185 square metres. The car park will be made of 5 1/2 levels with 1 1/2 below ground level and the other four above.
“The complex will provide an essential service in the New Kingston area,” said Senator Whiteman.
Construction, he said, was expected to commence within the next six weeks and should be completed within the next 18 months.
