Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, says sprint icon Usain Bolt stands as a symbol of hard work and success, which young Jamaicans can emulate.

Describing the Olympic champion as a “great role model”, the Minister said, like Bolt, youth should focus on their goals and exercise discipline.

“Young people must learn, as he said, to ‘take it step by step’. Work hard, be disciplined, and you will achieve your goals,” she noted.

Ms Grange was speaking to JIS News at a press conference for the 2017 JN Racers Grand Prix, held on June 8 at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.

Earlier in the press conference, Bolt had given the “step by step” advice for young athletes.

Meanwhile, the Sports Minister informed journalists that the statue commissioned by the Government to honour the track and field legend is ready.

She said Bolt and his team have looked at it and they “are very happy with it”.

“It is going to be a great attraction. People all over the world will want to view it; there is a possibility that smaller versions of the statue could become available,” the Minister informed.

The Racers Grand Prix, slated for the National Stadium in St. Andrew on Saturday (June 10), will feature some of the world’s top athletes.

It is being held under the banner ‘Salute to a Legend’, in honour of Bolt, who has signalled that he will be retiring from competition this year.

The sprint icon, who is expected to run his last race on Jamaican soil at the Grand Prix, said charitable projects will be among his areas of focus when he retires.

“That is excellent,” Ms. Grange said in commending the focus.

She noted that she has been in discussion with Bolt and his management “to see how we can partner to leverage his legendary status”, noting that he can make a significant contribution to the country’s creative economy.
