Blue Lagoon Preservation order Extended to December

Cabinet has approved the extension of the preservation notice over the Blue Lagoon site in Portland for a further six months, from June to December 2012.

Making the announcement at the Jamaica House press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on June 13, Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, explained that the notice has been placed by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT), as it intends to declare the site a national monument.

She informed that within the period of the extension of the preservation order, the JNHT will declare the Blue Lagoon a national monument, complete the sustainable management plan for the area, and the preservation scheme.

The Trust will also employ its best efforts in supporting and facilitating the declaration of a craft village by the Portland Parish Council; establish a management entity to oversee and coordinate the activities within the protected area; establish sanitary facilities; complete the registration of the Blue Lagoon Alliance; and continue with the public education programme relating to the area.

The Blue Lagoon is a natural lagoon, situated some seven miles east of Port Antonio, with depth of approximately 180 feet. The site was originally called the Blue Hole, but following the success of the film ‘The Blue Lagoon’ which was filmed at the location, the site was re-named.
