The Full Story

Members of the Hanover Bee Farmers Co-operative Society have been commended for their steadfastness and devotion to apiculture over the past five years.

Addressing the third annual general meeting of the Society in Lucea, Hanover recently, the Minister also lauded them for the part they have played in the development of the industry, not only in the parish of Hanover, but also in St. James and Westmoreland.

He cited construction of a honey bottling plant, with funding provided by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), as another goal being pursued by the Society.

“In keeping with your mission of developing the industry in the parishes of St. James, Westmoreland and in Hanover, I note the strides being made in ensuring that honey and its by-products are processed and packaged according to international standards,” the Minister said.

He said that of greater satisfaction was the employment opportunities created for farmers and those to be employed there.

“This speaks volumes to what can be achieved when you work together as a group. That is why, as a government, we have been encouraging our farmers to become members of a Production and Marketing Organization (PMO) where you can pool your resources, learn from each other and have access to more benefits,” Mr. Hutchinson said.

He encouraged all farmers to play their part in the total development of the industry, stressing that if Jamaica is to become economically strong and viable, the agricultural sector must “come into their own and lead the way.”
