Bailey Bridge Being Erected In Black River

A single lane Bailey Bridge is being erected in Black River, St. Elizabeth, to allow for the refurbishing of the old bridge by the National Works Agency (NWA).
Communications Manager at the NWA, Vando Palmer, told JIS News that the bridge was being assembled on the instruction of Minister of State for Transport and Works, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, and should be completed within the next two weeks.
“This of course is coming closely on the heels of a visit to Black River in December 2003 by Dr. Ferguson, on the request of Member of Parliament, Donald Buchanan and Mayor of the town, Franklin Witter,” Mr. Palmer pointed out.
He emphasised that motorists entering Black River from Southern St. Elizabeth should exercise due caution.
“Work on the Bailey Bridge actually started on Friday, January 9, and the NWA is also making sure that the proposed route, which we expect most motorists to take – the Mountainside to Lacovia main road – is properly patched and rehabilitated,” Mr. Palmer said. He noted that about $1.3 million would be spent to repair the alternative route.
“It was a little over a year ago that a $17 million contract was signed to repair the deteriorating Black River bridge,” the Communications Manager pointed out.
