The Full Story

Over 500 children and parents from Sandy Bay, Montpelier and adjoining communities of eastern Hanover, were hosted at back-to-school treats and health fairs last weekend on the grounds of the Fletcher’s Grove and Montpelier Baptist churches.

The students benefited from medical/dental examinations and were presented with books and other school supplies. They also enjoyed games such as football, a bounce house, kid’s concert, story-telling, and delicious food and refreshments.

Representatives from the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security were also on hand to offer their services.

The activities were made possible by the Harris Family Vision Foundation in New York, which was started by sisters, Kimberly and Nekhidia Harris, 16 years and 18 years, respectively.

President, Michael Harris, told JIS News that the foundation was established some seven years ago but that the family has been giving back to Jamaica for over 20 years now.

“Last year, we handed over the refurbished Madras Health Centre in St. Ann to the Government of Jamaica to benefit thousands of citizens,” he said.

“This year, so far, we have gone into eight communities across Jamaica – Franklin Town in St. Andrew, May Pen in Clarendon, Hector’s River in Portland, Enfield in St. Mary, Ewarton in St. Catherine, Cave Valley in St. Ann, and Fletcher’s Grove and Montpelier in Hanover.  Overall, we have touched the lives of some 3,000 adults and children, ensuring that they experience some levels of preparation to face the new school year,” Mr. Harris said.

He said the family also provides scholarships to students and expressed appreciation to Jamaican companies that have assisted the foundation over the years.

Nekhidia Harris told JIS News that it was a joy to see the smiles on the children’s faces when they are given back-to-school supplies.

“I like very much to see the joy and the smiles on the children’s faces when they get their gifts and back to school supplies.  It makes me happy to see children’s faces light up with joy as they are assisted with material that they really need.  It makes me really happy,” she told JIS News.
