The KingstOOn Animation Conference and Afro-descendant Festival is to be held from March 12 to 13 at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts, in Kingston.
The festival is seeking to engage unattached or at-risk youth to expose them to opportunities that the animation industry can offer them.
Addressing a JIS ‘Think Tank’, today (February 2), State Minister in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Hon. Julian Robinson, said that “KingstOOn is a fantastic opportunity for Jamaican youth to make the important connections that can propel them forward to be a part of the animation industry.”
He noted that the festival will be a free two-day event with panel discussions, masters classes, workshops and business meetings.
Mr. Robinson pointed out that a number of animation industry experts from around the world will be in Jamaica to participate in the sessions.
Meanwhile, Animation Specialist with the Ministry, Robert Reid, said the masters classes and workshops to be featured will include storytelling, story boarding, character design, and the creation of animation portfolio,
He added that the festival, entitled ‘Learn, Earn, Display’, will focus on the creative and the business aspects of things, with the latter focusing on the distribution of content, merchandising of content, monetizing content, and finding funding in the Jamaican landscape.
The panel discussions will feature representatives from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), to speak on the launching of the CAPE programme in animation and game design, as well as other regional groups that teach the programme.
Studios and educational institutions will have display booths at the festival, Mr. Reid said, adding that regional and African studios with afro-descendant content have been invited take part.
Mr. Reid informed that software companies will be at the festival to discuss their products and their capabilities.
“At the festival, persons will be able to meet with industry players that will propel them into creating their network,” he said.
Mr. Reid spoke of three major competitions, the emerging animated content competition, the international animated content competition and the pitch competition. The deadline for these competitions is February 7, and persons seeking more information may visit: www.kingstoonfest.com.
The State Minister is encouraging all persons with an interest in animation, students from colleges, universities, vocational training institutions and high schools to participate in KingstOOn.
KingstOOn is a collaboration among the Ministry, the World Bank, JAMPRO, Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts, Wacom, TV Paint, Esirom and Toonboom.
