$56 Million for Projects to Boost Livestock Quality and Research Stations

A sum of $56.6 million has been allocated in the 2012/13 Estimates of Expenditure for several projects being undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, aimed at improving the quality of livestock and research and quarantine facilities.

To the total, $21.2 million will go to the Animal Breeding and Husbandry project to continue measures to enhance livestock and animal products.

The allocation will be divided among several sub-projects. These are: the Cattle Rescue Programme, $7.3 million; the Pig Commercialization project, $3.6 million; the Sheep and Goat development project is to get $2.9 million; while the Feeds Research and Evaluation for Livestock project, will receive $2.6 million of the sum.

In addition, the Research and Evaluation of Breeding Systems for Dairy and Meat Animals project will get $1.8 million; the Research and Evaluation of Husbandry Systems for Livestock, $1.7 million; and Meat Goat Commercialization Project, $1.06 million.

In the meantime, $23.4 million has been allocated to the Research Station Management project to boost agricultural research.

The funds, to be distributed to the Bodles, Montpelier and Orange River research stations, will be used for the purchase and maintenance of equipment and other services.

In addition, funds amounting to $12 million have also been provided in the Estimates to commence the refurbishment of the National Quarantine Facility.
