The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information is spending $4.3 billion under the School Feeding Programme for the 2016/17 academic year.
The allocation will provide meals for over 130,000 students in early childhood, primary and secondary schools, including beneficiaries under the Programme for Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH).
Chief Education Officer in the Ministry, Dr. Grace McLean, made the disclosure at a JIS Think Tank on September 2.
As it relates to the readiness of school plants, she informed that repairs are being undertaken to several schools and the delivery of furniture has commenced. Director of Technical Services in the Ministry, Carey Brown, said that works are being done under five projects – critical back-to-school repairs; critical infrastructure upgrading; construction; and partition and sanitation.
Approximately $759 million has been allocated to effect repairs to 190 schools, while $70 million is being used for renovation or modification works leading to the creation of 30 infant departments, and classroom partitions at 15 primary schools. Meanwhile, Dr. McLean is encouraging all stakeholders to work together to ensure a smooth start to the new academic year.
