The Full Story

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) will be spending $35 million to establish a Waste Transfer Station near Georges Plain, in Westmoreland.

This was announced by Regional Operations Manager of the NSWMA, Eifert Daley, as he addressed a Westmoreland Town Hall Meeting on July 17, at the Frome Technical High School.

The meeting was organized by the Westmoreland Parish Council and the NSWMA, with residents taking part in the discussions.

Mr. Daley informed that the station, which should be established within six months, will help to improve garbage collection in the parish and greatly offset the high cost to transport waste to the Retirement Dump in St. James.

With the building of the new facility, small units will transfer garbage to larger vehicles at the site, and these would then transport the garbage to St. James.

“We have to think of avenues that we can use in an efficient way, with the limited resources that we have, to ensure that your waste collection moves from one day per week to two days,” Mr. Daley told the audience.

He indicated that the concept has been under discussion for over three years and construction will get underway as soon as the Westmoreland Parish Council gives approval.

“The establishment of the station should reduce travel time for the units, reduce wear and tear on them and also increase the number of trips that we can do per day.  As a result, there should be a better service for you the residents and also result in significant reduction in expenditure,” Mr. Daley explained.
