March 29, 2004

The Full Story

Twenty-six new Justices of the Peace (JPs) were sworn in on Friday, March 26 to serve the parish of St. Mary, at a function held at Beaches Hotel in Boscobel.
Presided over by Custos of St. Mary, Hon. A.A. Bobby Pottinger, the function was attended by a wide cross section of persons, including relatives and associates of the new JPs, and a number of individuals representing several government and non-governmental organizations in the parish.
In his address, Custos Pottinger reminded the new JPs about the high level of responsibility vested in the office to which they were appointed, and exhorted them to carry out their duties with integrity at all times.
He explained that the role they would be called on to perform would enable them to significantly widen the scope of voluntary service they were currently giving to their communities, adding that their leadership would go a far way in improving the quality of life in those areas.
The Custos refuted criticisms that the appointment of JPs in St. Mary was done on a political basis. He noted that the selection was carried out by a Committee consisting of the Police, the Resident Magistrate for the parish, and the Custos, and that every effort was made to ensure that only persons of the highest integrity were approved for appointment.
Minister of Information, Senator Burchell Whiteman, who also addressed the JPs, congratulated them on their appointment, and expressed confidence that their performance would meet the high expectations of the office they had assumed.
The Minister said their appointment was a reflection of the confidence and the respect they had earned in their communities, and implored them to always endeavour to put the interest of their communities above their personal wishes and desires. He said that in so doing, they would be laying the foundation for a solid and sustainable community development process in the country.
He said the government was fully supportive of the role being played by the JPs in the daily functioning of the society, and that the requirements of their office had made them an indispensable part of the process of administering the affairs of the country.
