The Full Story

The Government has allocated $250 million towards the acquisition of garbage trucks to increase the National Solid Waste Management Authority’s (NSWMA) fleet.

Details are provided in the 2017-18 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.

The project, which is being implemented by the NSWMA, aims to increase the fleet of trucks for garbage collection at the NSWMA and to make final payment on the trucks which were ordered in the 2016/17 fiscal year.

Additionally, $187 million has been set aside to increase the fleet and capacity of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) to adequately respond to emergencies under the JFB’s Fixed Asset Acquisition project.

The money will be spent to complete the purchase of two water tankers provided for in the fiscal year 2015/16 budget allocation and two water pumpers procured in the 2016/17 fiscal year, as well as to commence purchase of two water tankers.

The projects are being funded through the Government’s Consolidated Fund.
