  • Following the ceremony, Jean Elaine Fairclough, who received an Order of Distinction CD, for outstanding public service, told JIS NEWS that her motivation for dedicating her life to the public service was simply to give of her best to her countrymen.
  • In addition, seven members of the JCF and one member from the DCS were conferred with the Medal of Honour for Gallantry. Under the National Honours and Awards Act, promulgated on July 18, 1969, provision is made for those outstanding Jamaicans to be conferred with one of the honours of the Orders of the six Societies of Honour.

A total of 200 Jamaicans were recognized for their outstanding contributions to nation building at the National Honours and Awards ceremony held on National Heroes Day today (October 17) on the lawns of King’s House.

Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen who presided over the ceremony, presented the awardees, with their awards in the categories of the Order of Jamaica (OJ); Order of Distinction (in the rank of Commander [CD] and Officer [OD]); the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service; the Badge of Honour for Meritorious and Long and Faithful Service; the Medal of Honour for Gallantry; the Badge of Honour for Gallantry and the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller headed the list of dignitaries and other guests who attended the function.

Former Member of Parliament Dr. Kenneth Lee O’Neil Baugh was one of five Jamaicans conferred with the country’s fifth highest honour, the Order of Jamaica for distinguished service to Parliament, public service and for his contribution to medicine.

Other awardees in this category include: Dr. David Wayne Boxer, CD, for his invaluable contribution to the National Gallery of Jamaica and the development of the Arts; Professor Denise Eldemire-Shearer for outstanding and distinguished advocacy for senior citizens in the fields of health and welfare; Professor Renn Osmond Holness, for outstanding contribution in the field of medicine, neurosurgery; and Ambassador Anthony Smith Rowe Johnson, for distinguished national service in the public and private sectors and his contribution to the Jamaican foreign service.

Following the ceremony, Jean Elaine Fairclough, who received an Order of Distinction CD, for outstanding public service, told JIS NEWS that her motivation for dedicating her life to the public service was simply to give of her best to her countrymen.

“It is a commitment to serve your fellow Jamaicans. I have been in the public service for a number of years and that has really been the mantra, to do good, treat people as you would like to be treated and to ensure that the public service offers the best service,” she said.

Meanwhile Paralympics coach, Neville Everton Sinclair who received the Order of Distinction, Officer Class, for distinguished contribution and dedication to the training of Jamaica’s Paralympians, encouraged young persons to give back to their communities.

“It is very important because we have persons in different areas that need help and they should step up to the line,” he said.

Thirty-three persons were conferred with the Order of Distinction, in the rank of Commander (CD); 46 received the Order of Distinction, in the rank of Officer (OD); two civilians received the Badge of Honour for Gallantry; 16 individuals conferred with the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service and 37 received the Badge of Honour for Long and Faithful Service.

Members of the uniformed service were also recognised, with 11 members from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), 12 members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), 16 from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and 13 from the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) receiving the Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service.

In addition, seven members of the JCF and one member from the DCS were conferred with the Medal of Honour for Gallantry.
Under the National Honours and Awards Act, promulgated on July 18, 1969, provision is made for those outstanding Jamaicans to be conferred with one of the honours of the Orders of the six Societies of Honour.
