$200 Million for Flood Damage Rehabilitation Projects

May 16, 2012

The Full Story

The Government has allocated almost $200 million for activities under the flood damage rehabilitation projects, being undertaken by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing.

This is outlined in the 2012/2013 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives.

They are the River Training Project, for which some $61 million has been allocated; and the Cleaning of Gullies Programme, which has received a $138.6 million injection.

The provision under the River Training component of the project will facilitate sea defence works and river training where serious erosion has taken place in flood prone areas.

For the Cleaning of Gullies Progamme, the money will be used for the cleaning of gullies ahead of the hurricane season.

Implementation of the works will be effected through the National Works Agency (NWA).

The flood damage rehabilitation programme aims to develop a comprehensive system for dealing with disasters, whether natural or manmade, by preventive measures, public education and planning emergency operations, so as to mitigate the human and economic impact of disasters.
