1,000 Pounds Sterling to Relief Fund from ‘My Jamaica’ Launch

Some 1,000 Pounds Sterling is to be donated to the Jamaica Hurricane Ivan Relief Fund by MacMillan Caribbean and Jamaican artist, Judy Ann MacMillan, following the London launch of her new book, ‘My Jamaica’.
The funds represent the proceeds of the sale of Miss MacMillan’s book during the launch last Thursday (September 23) at the Jonathan Clarke Gallery in Chelsea, London.
Publisher, Nicholas Gillard said both MacMillan and the artist decided to make the donation to support the rebuilding efforts now underway in Jamaica, following the severe damage caused by Hurricane Ivan.High Commissioner, Her Excellency, Maxine Roberts welcomed this gesture when she spoke at the launch.
“I am pleased to be here because the artist and the publishers MacMillan Caribbean will be donating the proceeds of tonight’s sales to the Jamaica Hurricane Ivan Relief Fund, that was opened by the High Commission last week in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ivan. This is a very generous act and please be assured that the Government and people of Jamaica are grateful for your kindness, which will make the difficult period of adjustment for the island that much easier,” the High Commissioner said.
She also had high praise for ‘My Jamaica’. “This is truly a unique collection of paintings by Judy Ann, whose astute eye and observation has captured the very essence of Jamaica and Jamaicans,” she added.
Miss MacMillan, who is a prominent member of the Jamaican art community, said she was influenced by some renowned Jamaican artists, including Albert Huie and Carl Abrams.
‘My Jamaica’ represents a selection of her works throughout her career, and include the landscapes for which she is best known, and portraits of her fellow Jamaicans.
